Common Dental Myths Debunked

COMMON DENTAL MYTHS DEBUNKED
BY: DR. JIVAN

Myth #1: Brushing harder is better.

Many people believe that brushing harder will result in cleaner teeth. However, brushing too hard can actually damage the enamel and irritate the gums, leading to sensitivity and other dental issues. Instead, focus on brushing gently in circular motions for two minutes, twice a day.

Myth #2: Sugar is the main cause of cavities.

While sugar can contribute to cavities, it’s not the only culprit. Bacteria in the mouth produce acid when they break down food, including carbohydrates like bread, pasta, and potatoes. This acid can erode the enamel and cause cavities. It’s important to brush and floss regularly to remove food particles and bacteria from your mouth.

TIP: Keep a toothbrush at your workplace and brush in between meals or coffee breaks!

Myth #3: Whiter teeth are healthier teeth.

While many people associate whiter teeth with better oral health, the color of your teeth does not necessarily indicate their health. In fact, overusing whitening products can actually damage the enamel and make teeth more susceptible to cavities and other issues. It’s important to prioritize overall oral health over quick-fix cosmetic solutions sold at big-box stores.

TIP: For the healthiest whitening options available, schedule a complementary smile enhancement consult to see what in-office options are best suited for your goals while never sacrificing your oral health.

Myth #4: You only need to see the dentist when you have a problem.

Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are essential for maintaining good oral health. Dr. Jivan can detect issues early on and provide preventive care to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Skipping regular appointments can lead to more serious dental issues down the road.
